SKINCARE 101 – INTRO TO EMULSIONS
JULES C on AUGUST 28, 2019
Korean skincare is notorious for having multiple steps and products. Many products seem to be very similar to others – Essence vs. ampoule vs. serum, anyone? One of these products is the humble emulsion – usually categorized with creams and other hydrators, it’s an unsung hero for those looking for lightweight, non-cloying hydration.
What are they?
Emulsions are moisturizers! They’re lighter than a traditional cream, but offer the same benefits of locking in hydration. An emulsion will sink into the skin more quickly than a cream, which may sit on top of the skin longer.
Where do they fit in?
Emulsions are perfect at the end of a skincare routine – either layered with something heavier when looking for additional hydration or as the final moisturizing step to seal everything else in. They are perfect for warmer weather, as they don’t feel heavy on the skin. However, you’re free to put them wherever you think best or what works for your current routine and skincare needs.
Who should use them?
Anyone! K-Beauty is amazingly diverse, meaning there’s usually a product to fit every skincare type. Emulsions can be found with all of the popular ingredients, meaning there’s bound to be one that fits what you need for your skin.
If you have oily skin and are looking for a lightweight hydrator with oil control ingredients, you may want to check out Swanicoco’s AC Control Emulsion – the top ingredient is tea tree leaf water instead of plain water, perfect for hydrating yet keeping sebum in check. In need of something richer? The Thank You Farmer Miracle Age Repair Emulsion has hydrating ingredients such as squalane and argan tree kernel oil to keep your skin from feeling dry.
