SECRET KEY BLACK SNAIL

ORIGINAL CREAM REVIEW

KATHERINE SPOWART on MARCH 27, 2020

I was so grossed out when I first found out about snail skincare in Korea. I just couldn’t fathom why I would want to apply an ingredient like that to my face. Fast forward to a couple of months later, and soon enough I was curious enough to try my first snail skincare product, the classic Mizon Snail Recovery Gel, and I’ve never looked back. My skin loves snail mucin. I find it to be healing, soothing, and moisturizing and it’s become my go-to ingredient. That’s why I’m excited to be reviewing the Secret Key Black Snail Original Cream today, as it’s made with 90% snail mucin in the formula. Let’s get into it.

SECRET KEY

I don’t really know a whole lot about this brand and their website is not overly helpful. Described as “the leading brand of Global Beauty Healing Life, that plays an important role in human life beyond the beauty through the being part of people’s life and practical use of science”.

So take from that what you will, because if I’m completely honest, it doesn’t mean much to me. I know that their products tend to focus on key Korean skincare trends such as fermented ingredients, peeling gels, and snail cream. They’re definitely considered to be a budget option as most products are priced under $25 and are easily available online both domestically in Korea and internationally.

PRODUCT INFO

On their official site, the information in English is extremely poorly written. I appreciate they are a budget brand but I do believe that if you’re providing information in another language, then it should be written well or at least make sense (which most of their description doesn’t). You can check that out here.

The best description I’ve found is from Yes Style: “Containing as much as 90% pure black snail extract, this cream hydrates, firms, brightens and heals damaged skin. A blend of shea butter, honey, olive oil, and green tea ensures a soothing and long-lasting moisturizing effect”.

The ingredients list looks good at a glance:

There is 50g of the cream in the pot which is completely acceptable for the price of around $20 (depending on where you purchase).

TEXTURE & SCENT

When you first dip into the cream, the runny texture is very noticeable. The consistency is extremely light with a slight stretchiness because of the snail mucin ingredient. It’s not off-putting to me because I’ve used snail products before, but it can definitely take some getting used to if it’s a new texture for you. It’s much more watery and lotion-like than a typical cream’s consistency but it smoothes so easily and comfortably over the skin. A little seems to go a long way which is always a good thing. My skin absorbs the product quickly and I really enjoy how it feels!

Unfortunately, the scent is really disappointing. It’s quite floral, very strong, and perfumey. It does bother me when I use the product and it also lingers a little after application. If only they didn’t add that fragrance!

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Aside from my personal dislike for the scent, I have been really enjoying this cream. The texture is so comfortable on the skin, the cream absorbs easily, and my skin feels moisturized and nourished. If I use it at night, my skin is noticeably softer in the morning although I do need an oil or additional heavy moisture because my skin is normal-dry. I don’t enjoy the scent and that’s a shame because other than that I think the cream is a really good, affordable choice.

The downside is the mild discomfort when my skin is sensitized and I think it must be due to the fragrance. My skin usually loves snail mucin and it’s always been particularly beneficial at moments when my skin is sensitive or irritated. It’s highly unusual that I’d experience irritation from a snail product and the only ingredient that stands out to me as a potential irritant would be the fragrance. Again, this hasn’t been an issue when my skin is in normal condition, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing a lot more sensitivity these days and I need to take that into consideration.

Ultimately, I’m pleased I tried this cream and think it’s a great budget option for normal skin. It’s light, easily absorbs, and leaves my skin feeling nourished and soft. My only warning is that if you’re sensitive to scent, I would pass.

What’s your favorite snail skincare product?
